PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - If all goes well, Johan Santana could rejoin the starting pitching rotation for the Mets in New York in late June.
At least they hope.
Venezuelan ace season was interrupted by a left shoulder surgery in mid-September, and this is the first time the season starts a lefty on the list the disabled.
Two-time Cy Young Award winner began making pitches on flat ground two weeks ago. General Manager Sandy Alderson said team doctors have a plan in which it is considered that Santana will be pitching off a mound in April or early May, and will do in the big leagues less than two months later.
"If we do the sum, this leads us to the end of June, the first or second part of July," said Alderson.
Speaking to reporters for the first time this spring training, Santana said he was told that if it complies with appropriate rehabilitation, should be able to recover their previous level of pitching. Hander is 133-69 and effectiveness of 3.10 in a total of 11 seasons.
Santana said he was "optimistic" that his career will not be affected by the injury - tearing of the internal capsule - which, he said, there is a common injury.
"Injuries are part of the game," he said. "You never know when they will occur and how severe they will be and how they will affect your career. I'm very optimistic. This is how I am. I will do my best to get the best shape and try to strengthen my arm, but time will tell, "he said.
Santana said that so far has not felt pain since he began performing release, expected only minor discomfort.
"I've been throwing for almost two weeks, every third day," said Santana. "I had some stiffness, but that's part of what one must go, I was told, and I'm aware of that," he said.
