Zambrano wants to open in 2011 with Cubs
MESA, Ariz. - After a season in which he was placed on the list of players suspended or restricted, the pitcher for the Chicago Cubs Carlos Zambrano said Monday it will be his game speak for him in this season.
"I will do more in the realm of what I speak," Zambrano said before pitchers and catchers the Cubs rolled onto the field for the first time this spring. "This year I do not mean anything. I just want to be my numbers do the talking."
Zambrano was suspended in June after his fight in the dugout with teammate Derrek Lee and manager Lou Piniella during a game against the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. He then spent a month on the restricted list and underwent anger management therapy. He
hard for the Cubs, compiling 8-0 in his last 11 starts and showed great control of his changeup, his fastball and his slider fingers splayed, as he threw his fastball between 89 and 91 mph.
Zambrano said Monday that it would be the Opening Day pitcher for the Cubs, which would be its seventh out of this class in a row.
"Of course I want to be in the lineup Opening Day," Zambrano said. "I want to open the season for the Cubs. The decision is up to Mike [Quade, the Cubs manager. There is nothing I can do if he decides to use [Ryan] Dempster or [Matt] Garza."
